Real Madrid’s La Liga title aspirations suffered a significant setback as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Athletic Club. Kylian Mbappé’s woes from the penalty spot continued, as he missed his second consecutive spot-kick, further exacerbating his side’s woes.

Athletic Club seized the initiative early in the second half, courtesy of Alex Berenguer’s close-range finish. Mbappé had a chance to equalize from the penalty spot, but his effort was thwarted by reserve goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala, marking a pivotal moment in the match.

Jude Bellingham drew Real Madrid level with his fourth goal in as many Liga games, but Athletic Club responded promptly. Gorka Guruzeta capitalized on a Valverde error and finished past Thibaut Courtois to seal the victory, dealing a significant blow to Madrid’s title aspirations.

The defeat raises questions about Real Madrid’s ability to mount a sustained title challenge. Mbappé’s penalty miss and Valverde’s error proved costly, and the team’s lackluster performance will be a cause for concern for manager Carlo Ancelotti.

In terms of individual performances, Thibaut Courtois was rated 5/10, having made important saves but also committing a mistake that led to the Athletic opener. Lucas Vazquez received a rating of 6/10, having run a lot but ultimately failing to deliver a decisive final pass.

Raul Asencio and Antonio Rudiger both received ratings of 6/10, with Asencio making vital defensive interventions but being done for pace on the Athletic winner, and Rudiger winning the Madrid penalty but keeping things tidy defensively.

Fran Garcia was rated 7/10, having put in excellent defensive work but being unlucky to be subbed. In midfield, Aurelien Tchouameni received a rating of 5/10, having been sloppy at times but also having a mixed 70 minutes.

Federico Valverde was also rated 5/10, having given the ball away to gift Athletic the winner. Dani Ceballos received the same rating, having been tidy with the ball but lacking imagination.
