‘We didn’t agree he told me to play as a left back but I didn’t….’… Joao Cancelo shares what went wrong between him and Pep Guardiola at Man City
Joao Cancelo has broken his silence about what went wrong between him and Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
The world was stunned in January last year when Cancelo was loaned out to Bayern Munich after losing his position in City’s squad for a couple of games following the Qatar World Cup.
According to reports in August, Pep Guardiola and the Portuguese full-back have had difficulty working together since the 2021/2022 season.
Joao Cancelo claims he “didn’t agree” with Pep Guardiola on some issues.
Recently, the 29-year-old, who is presently on loan at Barcelona, declared his intention to join the club permanently during the summer transfer window.
Guardiola acknowledged in June that City would have sold the former Inter Milan technician to arch rivals Manchester United.
Joao Cancelo has now provided a brief update on his friendship with Pep Guardiola.

“There are some points where we disagreed, and we are not required to agree on everything. I had disagreements with him, or he didn’t agree with something I said, and that was it. But I feel no hatred; instead, I am quite appreciative. “Life goes on, and I am very happy here,” he told Portuguese news station RTP.
Joao Cancelo gives a classy retort.
Joao Cancelo elected not to divulge all of the specifics around his probable disagreement with Pep Guardiola.
Cancelo has expressed his thanks for the opportunity to work with Guardiola, who is regarded as one of the greatest managers in football history.
Before leaving City to join Bayern and Barcelona, the ex-Valencia defender was a key member of the Sky Blues and one of the best players in Europe.
Last month, Paul Merson stated that the Benfica academy product “changed the face of football” by popularising the use of the inverted full-back position in the Premier League.
Cancelo’s relationship with Guardiola may have broken down, but rather than firing shots at him and making drama, he opted to focus on his football, which is always preferable than a pointless public rift.
