Barcelona defeated Las Palmas in a thrilling comeback to start 2024 on a positive note in Gran Canaria. The Catalans’ performance was hardly convincing, particularly in the first half, but it didn’t really matter because they won.
In his post-match remarks to the media, Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez gave his evaluation of the game (via Marca). He feels that his team earned the victory over Garcia Pimienta’s team.
“We failed to get the through pass in the first half. We erred by allowing them to have such a long queue. We were able to understand it better in the second half after that. To do this, we engaged in a particular exercise this week.
We anticipated being quite dominant. We did a great job of applying pressure after falling behind. We deserved to win since we played the game to win it.
Xavi also mentioned Vitor Roque, who made his Barcelona debut in the last ten minutes of the match against Las Palmas.
“Roque performed admirably and energised us in the last few minutes.”
Xavi concluded by giving a favourable update on Joao Cancelo’s injury status, pointing out that the Portuguese defender had been pulled off early due to what appeared to be a knee issue.
Cancelo is alright; nothing seems seriously wrong.
Barcelona will now focus on their matchup with Barbastro this next weekend in the Copa del Rey, which they hope to win for the first time since 2021.
