Premier league has announced Why Andre Onana was NOT sent off despite being shown two yellow cards in Coventry win

Despite getting two yellow cards, Andre Onana was permitted to remain on the field in Manchester United’s FA Cup semi-final victory against Coventry.

With five minutes to go, Onana was cautioned for timewasting, and Coventry went on to score an incredible injury-time equalizer. The game went into extra time, with neither team able to advance, though the Championship side did have a goal disallowed for offside in the last minute.

A penalty shootout ensued, with Onana receiving a yellow card after arguing with referee Robert Jones. Despite receiving two yellow cards, Onana was permitted to remain on the field, and United went on to win when Ben Sheaf’s penalty went over the crossbar.

Jones did not commit a mistake, since IFAB regulation 10.3 states that bookings do not carry over to penalty shootouts. According to the regulation, “Yellow cards and cautions from the game do not carry over into penalties.

“A player who received a red card during the game cannot participate. During penalties, players, substitutes, replaced players, and team officials may get a red or yellow card.

The FA has also confirmed that Onana will not be punished for United’s FA Cup final against arch rivals Manchester City. A similar scenario played out during Aston Villa’s Europa Conference League victory against Lille on Thursday.

Emi Martinez, Villa’s goalkeeper, was issued a second yellow card during the shootout after being booked during regular time. However, Martinez has been punished for the first leg of Villa’s semi-final, despite admitting that he was unaware of the regulations.

“It’s been a wild rollercoaster throughout my career. “I am a believer and a hard worker, and it was my destiny today,” he told TNT Sports.

“I always say throughout my career that I owe my team-mates in such situations; even when we were watching Real Madrid last night, the manager said we may go to penalties, and in those moments, I own my box.

“I get booked after 30 minutes, and we’re losing the game, so I’m not sure what the referee wants from me. In the shootout, there was no ball on the penalty spot, so I asked the ball guy for one… and then I was booked. “I just don’t comprehend the rules.”
