PGMOL under scrutiny over surprising VAR mistake made by The Referee during the Arsenal vs Westham match after the Ball went out of play-PGMOL have confirmed that the goal was given because of non-conclusive evidence to prove if the ball was out of play or not
“We’re sorry, Arsenal fans”: PGMOL admits VAR failure, begs Mikel Arteta not to offend them this time – North London.
PGMOL stated that VAR was not deployed when Arsenal lost to West Ham in their attempt to reclaim first place. Because it was hard to tell whether the ball stayed in play during the build-up to Tomas Soucek’s opening goal from the angles available at Stockley Park, the decision to continue play upheld.
Arsenal supporters insisted that Jarrod Bowen had not kept possession of the ball, but their mood deteriorated in the second half when former Gunners striker Konstantinos Mavropanos headed in James Ward-Prowse’s header to give Arsenal a 2-0 victory, dropping Mikel Arteta’s men to second place, two points behind Liverpool.
Arsenal fans saw every time Arsene Wenger said “I didn’t see it” as a reasonable excuse. Home fans, on the other hand, had little interest in rejecting VAR in the same way.
Was the ball crossed in the build-up to West Ham’s first goal or not? One of the photos produced by the advanced equipment partially deployed to address this issue revealed that the ball was still somewhat in play.
The ball, however, just vanished in the following photograph. Was the ball across the goal line, or was it barely behind Jarrod Bowen’s thigh? Stockley Park needed to make a decision on the pitch despite the lack of proof. Tomas Soucek’s close-range finish was approved.
So many questions, but in truth, Arsenal’s VAR position is considerably worse. Longer-term gains may come from investigating why Oleksandr Zinchenko simply ran into Gabriel in the buildup to the 13th-minute goal, and whether he has too many of similar errors in him to maintain a title bid.
A question that will be answered when the transfer window opens next week. There are other questions. Arsenal possessed 87% possession for seven exhilarating minutes, yet despite all the scrambling, deception, and backfires, Arsenal failed to threaten the Arsenal goal even from a distance.
They require someone who can consistently put the ball in the net. Gabriel Jesus has 24 goals in 43 Champions League games. However, his three Premier League goals are one of the reasons Arsenal has let so many of the games he has dominated get out of hand.
West Ham extended their advantage in the 56th minute when Mavropanos hit the underside of the bar from a Ward-Prowse corner – his hesitation to celebrate a testament to eight forgettable games in four years in that position. It was at this point that Jesus caused the disgruntled Arsenal fans sigh.
Bukayo Saka’s cross was straight at Alphonse Areola, followed by Ben White’s even better close-range cross that went high over the bar.
