Cancelo is still under contract with City until 2027, despite not playing for the club since January 2023 due to a falling out with Guardiola. He spent the last season on loan with Barcelona, after spending the later half of the 2022-23 season with Bayern Munich. Since his return from Portugal service, he has been working among his former teammates.
WHAT GUARDIOLA SAID
“He is training with us. We shall see if he stays or goes on loan. I do not know yet. He is training with us and doing really well during the sessions. He enjoys playing football. “We shall see,” Guardiola said during a press conference. When asked explicitly if Cancelo may stay with City for the season, he replied, “It could happen, sure.”
Cancelo was one of City’s finest performers in the Premier League championship triumphs of 2020-21 and 2021-22, but his relationship with the manager deteriorated after he was pulled from the starting lineup following the World Cup.
According to The Times, the Portuguese wore headphones and began listening to music at one of Guardiola’s pre-match squad meetings. Soon after, the coach told sporting director Txiki Begiristain, “Cancelo best go by the conclusion of the transfer window for the good of the squad.”
