Manchester United Manager Erik ten Hag told Man Utd outcast who never played a game is better than Andre Onana

Erik ten Hag has been advised that former loanee Jack Butland should replace Andre Onana as Manchester United’s number one custodian.

The Cameroonian custodian moved to Old Trafford from Inter Milan for £47 million this summer. And has had a difficult rookie season after making a number of high-profile mistakes.

Ex-Rangers player John Brown believes Butland should have been retained rather than the Red Devils spending money on Onana. Butland joined Manchester United on loan from Crystal Palace in January but did not make an appearance.

“I was always a fan of Butland,” Brown explained. “I’m shocked he didn’t get more minutes down south. When I look at the Premier League, there are several goalkeepers that I believe Jack Butland outperforms.

“He was Manchester United’s first-choice custodian, and if I were looking for a reliable keeper, Jack Butland would be my choice. So the fact that Rangers acquired him is wonderful for the club. Another consideration is that he will be playing in front of 50,000 people at each home game.

“He’s playing in Europe, going for trophies, he’s got a trophy in the bag, he probably has another 10 years at the top because of the years he’s missed.”

Butland joined with Scottish heavyweights Rangers in the summer after leaving Crystal Palace at the end of his contract. The 30-year-old has now made 40 appearances for the club and kept 20 clean sheets.

That stands in stark contrast to his experience at Old Trafford. Butland appeared on the bench 20 times for Manchester United, including in the FA Cup final, although he never made a senior game.

Butland remarked of his time with the Red Devils: “As much as I adored Palace and as amazing as United was, I missed playing. That is crucial to me. Okay, ‘Could you be at United?’

“Yes, but what would the remainder of my career be like? This was crucial to me. I wanted to remember the 30s as a prosperous period rather than one that faded away.”

Butland has made nine appearances for the England national team in his career, the last being in a 1-0 friendly victory against Switzerland in 2018. Following his departure from Manchester United, the Red Devils signed two goalkeepers in the summer.

In addition to Onana, they signed Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce. He made his long-awaited debut for the club in a 4-2 FA Cup fourth-round win over Newport County.
