‘If not for the dumb errors, the scoreline may have changed’: Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk blasts Arsenal fans for celebrating Liverpool’s loss as if they had already won the league trophy

After a string of errors that resulted in Arsenal’s second goal in their 3-1 victory over Liverpool on Sunday, Virgil van Dijk has taken ownership of the errors.

Liverpool battled back into the match in the first half after being outplayed, but with twenty-five minutes left, everything changed when Gabriel Martinelli received a long ball.

Goalie Alisson, who sprinted off his line, and Van Dijk were both taken aback by the unexpected bounce. Martinelli scored into an empty net after the Liverpool pair failed to clear the ball.

“I accept complete accountability for that,” Van Dijk said to Sky Sports following the match. “That is a pivotal point in the match.

“We were so dominant, so good, and had so many opportunities after the break that the atmosphere got nervous. It is my responsibility to clear the turning point, so I should try to do so. Although this obviously does not occur frequently in my line of work, I will get over it.

Since this is a physical game, I’m not searching for justifications. There is disagreement over the choice at the highest level. Alisson momentarily touched me and was unable to remove it, but I fully acknowledge my fault and promise to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“The Emirates is undoubtedly a challenging location for any of the league’s teams to visit. We were under a lot of pressure in the FA Cup.
