According to reports, Bologna is actively seeking additional funds to facilitate Riccardo Calafiori’s transfer to Arsenal this summer, though not directly from the Premier League club.
Calafiori enjoyed an impressive debut season with Bologna, making 33 appearances across all competitions and playing a crucial role in the team’s fifth-place finish in Serie A, which secured them a spot in the Champions League. He joined Bologna from Swiss club Basel last summer, with a 50 percent sell-on clause included in the transfer agreement.
Although it was reported almost two weeks ago that a deal for Arsenal to sign Calafiori was imminent, Bologna has yet to finalize the transfer. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reassured Arsenal supporters that the deal is progressing well. Romano highlighted that the Italian international, who performed admirably at Euro 2024, is enthusiastic about joining Arsenal.
Romano stated on his YouTube channel, “Arsenal have the match point to sign Riccardo Calafiori, and the player is obsessed with the opportunity to go to Arsenal. He loves the idea, the project, and the chance to play under a top coach like Mikel Arteta.”
During discussions about Calafiori, Bologna inquired about Arsenal defender Jakub Kiwior, but the Polish defender is not interested in a move. Romano noted on X that Kiwior might leave Arsenal on loan with a mandatory purchase option.
As reported by Corriere dello Sport via Sport Witness, Calafiori is preparing for preseason training later this month. Although Bologna has reached a feasible agreement with Arsenal, Basel’s 50 percent sell-on clause is complicating the transfer.
Bologna is attempting to persuade Basel to reduce their percentage of the sell-on clause to secure a larger portion of the transfer fee from Arsenal. However, Basel is resistant to this request, potentially prompting Bologna to seek additional funds from Arsenal if Basel does not comply.
Despite the delay, Calafiori has expressed his desire to join Arsenal, and Bologna will only allow the transfer to proceed if their financial conditions are met.
