Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has joined this shocking European Club for a year contract worth over £2 million
Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has signed for Italian club Fiorentina on a free transfer.
De Gea’s 12-year spell at Old Trafford came to an end last summer, when he left when his contract expired due to a failure to agree on an extension. The circumstances of his leaving were disputed. Some United supporters wanted De Gea to sign a new contract, while others thought the club should move on owing to worries about his distribution and ability to play out of the back.
After leaving United, De Gea had attention from Saudi Arabia but declined to play in the Middle East, instead spending the full 2023/24 season as a free agent.
The goalkeeper finished his physical on Friday and will be formally announced as a Fiorentina player ahead of the weekend, with the Serie A season starting next week. Fiorentina finished seventh in Italy’s first division last season and lost in the Conference League final for the second year in a row.
Soyfan Amrabat, a former United loanee, stays with the Florence club. Amrabat postponed his return to Fiorentina’s pre-season this summer in an attempt to force a move to United, but Italian media reports that he has already resumed training.
United want a midfielder before the transfer window ends on August 30, and Erik ten Hag was scheduled to explore the potential of purchasing Amrabat with new sports director Dan Ashworth, technical director Jason Wilcox, and chief executive Omar Berrada last month.
Amrabat is still regarded an option for United, and signing him has not been ruled out, so there is still a chance he may make his dream transfer to Old Trafford.
Many anticipated that De Gea would retire after failing to find a new club last season, but Fiorentina has presented him with an opportunity to continue his career. De Gea won the Premier League, FA Cup, two League Cups, and the Europa League at United, and was named Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year four times. He made a club-record 545 appearances as a goalkeeper and preserved 190 clean sheets, prompting thoughts of a testimonial at Old Trafford when he retires.
