Former Chelsea FLOP manager Graham Potter is about to become the manager of one of the biggest clubs in the world
Graham Potter is reportedly in contention to become Sweden’s national team manager, just days after being linked to potentially replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. Previously dismissed by Chelsea in April, Potter remains without a role since then.
Recent reports indicated Potter as a possible candidate for the Manchester United managerial position, particularly if Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS decided to change leadership. Ratcliffe, set to acquire a 25 percent stake in the club, is expected to make alterations to the support staff at Old Trafford.
Having garnered respect from INEOS chief Dave Brailsford, Potter was previously associated with Nice, another club owned by Ratcliffe. There were also reports of interest from Napoli regarding the managerial vacancy.
Now, Potter is emerging as a leading contender for the role of Sweden’s national team manager after Janne Anderson’s resignation. Following Sweden’s failure to qualify for Euro 2024, the country is seeking new leadership.
Potter’s familiarity with the Swedish football scene stems from his seven and a half years at Ostersund, guiding them from the fourth tier to the Europa League. The Swedish FA general secretary, Andrea Mllerberg, confirmed Potter is under consideration.
Mllerberg stated, “The list of names that I have received… it is clear that he is part of that list. We’ll see who is interested in this role. You probably have to be passionate about wanting to be the national team coach, especially given that it is different from club football. You may have to be ready for certain challenges.”
After leaving Ostersunds in 2018, Potter returned to England, joining the Championship club Swansea. Following a successful first season, he became Brighton’s head coach, transforming their playing style and achieving a ninth-place finish in the 2021-22 season. While Potter accepted the Chelsea job in the following season, the potential opportunity to manage Sweden’s national team may impact any plans for his future appointment as the Manchester United manager. Questions regarding Ten Hag’s future at Manchester United have also arisen following their 3-0 defeat to Manchester City.
