Arsenal is close to finalizing a deal for Espanyol’s star goalkeeper, Joan Garcia, marking their first signing of the summer transfer window. Garcia has garnered significant interest from various clubs, including major English teams and Spanish giants Real Madrid. However, it seems Arsenal has managed to secure his services, with an official announcement expected soon. Reports from Spain indicate that the 23-year-old goalkeeper will join Arsenal shortly, although the transfer fee remains undisclosed. Garcia still has four years remaining on his contract with Espanyol.
During the last season, Garcia made 21 appearances across all competitions for Espanyol, playing a pivotal role in their promotion to La Liga. When questioned about his future towards the end of the campaign, Garcia remained non-committal about a potential move, stating, “I have always felt the love of the fans. I’m very happy that people are with me. And for that part (transfers), don’t worry, I’m very good here and above all, I would ask you to be calm and encourage us.”
If the deal for Garcia is finalized, Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, may face a challenging decision regarding his goalkeeping options. David Raya, who joined Arsenal on loan from Brentford last season, is expected to make a permanent move to the Emirates for £27 million.
Speaking about the potential signing of Garcia at the end of the season, Arteta said, “Those conversations are for after the season. We will review where we are. Obviously, we are really happy with David and everything he has brought to the club and the team, there is no question about it. But, those decisions are taken by all of us at the club and we will see.”
Aaron Ramsdale’s future with Arsenal also remains uncertain. Having lost his starting position to Raya last season, Ramsdale has been linked with a move away from the club. Earlier reports suggested that Newcastle had agreed on a deal to sign Ramsdale, but they now appear to be focusing on Burnley’s James Trafford instead.
Arteta has expressed his expectation that Ramsdale will stay with Arsenal. The 26-year-old goalkeeper has two years remaining on his current contract. Arteta remarked, “A suggestion? There is a big reality that Aaron will be here because he is our player and has a contract.”
In addition to their interest in goalkeepers, Arsenal is also linked with potential signings of forwards this summer, including Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres. These moves indicate the club’s broader strategy to strengthen their squad across various positions in preparation for the upcoming season.
