England Manager Gareth Southgate explains why Cole Palmer did not play during international break
Gareth Southgate has said that Cole Palmer is still in the running to make his final Euro 2024 squad, even though he didn’t play a minute against either Brazil or Belgium. This is a big boost for Palmer’s already fading hopes.
Palmer broke into the England team for the first time in November and was called up again by Southgate for the recent matches at Wembley.
But he missed the Brazil game because of a small injury, and he didn’t even come off the bench for the Belgium game.
Southgate has a lot of options in attack now that Jarrod Bowen and Anthony Gordon have both played well in the last two games as well.

But Palmer is still very much on the mind of the England boss.
The Premier League season so far has seen Palmer score 11 goals and set up 8 others. Southgate said, “I said when I named the squad that there would be competition for places in those wide areas.”
“It’s too bad Cole Palmer missed so much training. He missed most of the week, so we couldn’t put him in the game [against Belgium] at that point.”
“With Gordon and J. Madison, we knew for sure what we would get, but with them, we weren’t sure.” I wouldn’t rule Cole out of the picture.”
English wingers are so good that well-known players like Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish might not be able to go to the Euros this summer.
Rashford only came off the bench for 15 minutes against Brazil and didn’t play as a substitute against Belgium. Grealish, on the other hand, didn’t get called up because he was hurt at Manchester City.
