Done Deal: After personal terms negotiated a few days earlier, Arsenal finally completes a £60 million transfer acquisition.
Arsenal is actively pursuing the acquisition of Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino during the summer transfer window, as reported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The North London club has already agreed on personal terms with the Spanish international, signaling their strong intent to secure the deal. The primary focus now lies on finalizing the payment structure for the transfer.
While Merino has garnered attention from top clubs such as Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, it is evident that he is eager to join Arsenal. His contract with Real Sociedad includes a €60 million (£52 million) release clause, though Arsenal aims to negotiate the transfer for approximately €25 million (£21 million).
Merino’s potential arrival at Arsenal could significantly impact the team’s midfield dynamics. Last season, the club heavily relied on Declan Rice and Kai Havertz in the No. 8 role. If Merino joins, Rice may assume more defensive duties, allowing Merino to showcase his strengths in central midfield.
Renowned for his aerial prowess, work rate, and defensive skills, Merino excelled last season, winning the most duels in Europe’s top five leagues and averaging over six recoveries per game. His capabilities make him a strong fit for the Premier League’s physical and tactical demands.
Additionally, Merino offers valuable attacking contributions. He was involved in 13 goals last season, and with Arsenal’s creative lineup, he could achieve even greater success. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta may see Merino as competition for Kai Havertz, although there is also the possibility of them playing together, particularly if Havertz is deployed as a forward.
Arsenal has already bolstered their squad with the signing of defender Riccardo Calafiori, and the acquisition of Merino would further enhance their lineup ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
