Coming from Fabrizio Romano this Morning Manchester City FLOP Kalvin Phillips has decided which Premier League club he wants to join
Manchester City and West Ham have struck an agreement regarding Kalvin Phillips.
Phillips made it plain months before the winter transfer window that he needed to move for more regular playing time if he was to have the best chance of remaining in the England squad for this summer’s European Championship. A number of clubs expressed interest in the former Leeds player, but several baulked at the price and terms City demanded.
West Ham were interested in Phillips in the summer when he elected to stay at the Etihad, and he has returned this month. The precise details of the contract have yet to be confirmed, but the two clubs have reached an agreement that allows Phillips to know he will spend the second half of the season at the London Stadium.
The Blues are unlikely to look for a replacement for Phillips, who has only 123 league minutes this season and has not played in the competition since a substitute appearance in a 6-1 home win over Bournemouth in early November.
They are still set to sign 19-year-old Argentine midfielder Claudio Echeverri from River Plate; the youth will be permitted to stay at his club for at least the next six months, with him viewed as a long-term investment rather than a one-time deal.
According to Premier League rules, Phillips will be unable to face his original club when West Ham visit the Etihad Stadium on the final day of the 2023/24 season. City will consider a permanent move in the summer and expressed interest in West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta last year.
Kalvin Phillips, Manchester City
The January transfer market has opened once more, and we wait to see if Manchester City will improve their squad as they aim to replicate last season’s remarkable Treble achievement.
City signed Croatians Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol from Chelsea and RB Leipzig, respectively, during the summer transfer window, with Jeremy Doku joining most recently. Matheus Nunes of the Wolves then joined the Blues on deadline day. January is unlikely to bring any significant signings, but all eyes have been on Kalvin Phillips’ potential departure.
