Chelsea Star Ian Maatsen has signed contract with this shocking Premier League for £40m after leaving Borussia Dortmund on loan.
Aston Villa has paid Chelsea a sum in order to sign Dutch defender Ian Maatsen.
Depending on possible add-ons, the 22-year-old will cost between £35m and £40m; the transfer is subject to a physical as the left-back is set to sign a six-year contract at Villa Park.
Maatsen chose Villa because of the potential of Champions League play next season; he reached the final of the tournament when on loan to Borussia Dortmund during the second part of last season.
Although the Blues had spoken about selling Maatsen alone, they had agreed to sign Villa striker Jhon Duran under an exchange arrangement.
After a strong loan term, Dortmund tried to sign Maatsen earlier this month but turned down the whole £35 million asked price.
Maatsen signed a 12-month contract extension in January, but it had a release provision that most likely would result in his leaving this summer.
He has not yet put pen to paper on a contract or completed a medical in the Midlands; he is with the Netherlands national squad in Germany at Euro 2024, against France on Friday in Leipzig.
Chelsea bought Maatsen from PSV Eindhoven in 2019, and although he struggled to make the mark under Mauricio Pochettino last season, he flourished on a succession of loans at Charlton, Coventry, Burnley and Dortmund.
Having played sixteen games for Stamford Bridge, he heads out.
