Erik ten Hag hasn’t felt completely safe in his job as coach of Manchester United for almost the whole 2023–24 season.
The Red Devils have had a rough start to the Premier League season, were knocked out of the Carabao Cup, and are now out of all European competitions after coming last in their Champions League group.
A lot of fans want Ten Hag to move on, but some think that the situation at United and the number of injuries mean that he should be given the chance to help the team get out of their latest mess.
Naturally, a lot of people have been linked with the job should it open up. Former Chelsea and Brighton manager Graham Potter is one of them.

Right now, it’s hard to tell how well Potter is known as a teacher. He became very well known for the work he did at Brighton, where he found young stars who did well with the Seagulls and then made the club a lot of money through trade sales.
You can’t just blame Potter for bringing in players like Tariq Lamptey, Kaoru Mitoma, Simon Adingra, Billy Gilmour, Julio Enciso, Leandro Trossard, Marc Cucurella, Moises Caicedo, and Pervis Estupinan. They all joined Brighton while Potter was the coach.
His ability to work well with both new and experienced players helped him put together a team that not only played exciting, attacking football but also won games.
Manchester United would really want to sign the Englishman if he played on the south coast, and there’s a reason why Chelsea wanted to bring him on board for their new age under Todd Boehly.
Potter’s seven months at Chelsea, on the other hand, were terrible. After taking over from Thomas Tuchel in September 2022, he lost the job by April, having won only 12 of the 31 games he was in charge of.
In Potter’s defense—and this may be what Manchester United is thinking too—that Chelsea was not going to win no matter who coached them. There were already a lot of players on the Blues team, but eight more were added, making it even harder to find a stable core.
When Manchester United make their choice, they will look at his time at Chelsea, but there are many good things from his time at Brighton that show he can do well at a big club. Man United isn’t a stable place to work either, but Potter ended up at the only big Premier League team where things were and maybe still are even more wild.
According to 90min, Potter wants to become a coach again in 2024. He has turned down offers to be the manager of Lyon in France and Leicester City in the Championship in the past.
Man United should think about Potter’s name if they decide to move on from Ten Hag. He isn’t a well-known choice, but Man United hasn’t had much luck with big hires in the past.
Man United will surely fire Erik ten Hag.

Another thing to think about is that Manchester United might not fire Ten Hag after all. The situation for the club and boss is strange and hard to understand.
Even though the Red Devils haven’t done well this season, Ten Hag has a good track record from his first season in charge. There are a lot of injuries that should be taken into account when judging his success, but the Dutchman hasn’t had a full starting lineup since the beginning of the 2023–24 season.
On Sunday, Manchester United could be without Bruno Fernandes, Victor Lindelof, Marcus Rashford, Tyrell Malacia, Mason Mount, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, Anthony Martial, and Victor Lindelof. They could also be without Lisandro Martinez. You only need one more custodian, and that’s your starting eleven.
That might help explain what happened on the pitch, but there’s also the matter of control to think about. Is there a way to fire Ten Hag and hire Potter or another coach?
The 25% stake that INEOS has in the club has not been publicly confirmed yet, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe is likely to be in charge of the sports side of things. Given how long that deal has been going on, it would take a lot for someone at Manchester United to sign Ten Hag right now.
