VERY SAD Bruno Fernandez news has been announced this morning as Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has stripped him off the Captain Batch and the new Captain has been named
Maya Le Tissier has been selected captain of Manchester United for the 2024–2025 season, replacing Katie Zelem, who left in the summer.
The center back, who originally came to the team from Brighton & Hove Albion two years ago, has made a name for herself as a reliable member of the backline.
“It is a privilege to be appointed captain of this outstanding football team, and I will proudly wear the armband to help lead this squad to victory both on and off the field,” she remarked.
Zelem had been in the position since 2019. She won the FA Cup in May but departed the following month after her contract expired. Since then, the midfielder has joined the NWSL’s Angel City.
Le Tissier had a stellar couple of seasons, establishing a solid relationship with Millie Turner and assisting United in 2022–23—a WSL record 14 clean sheets—as they finished second.
Le Tissier has made four appearances for her senior England team since receiving her first call-up following Euro 2022, aside from club football. She traveled to Australia with the team as part of the standby list for the 2023 World Cup, but she ended up not playing. However, Sarina Wiegman, the manager of the Lionesses, has viewed the 22-year-old more as a full-back—where she played for former club Brighton—than a center-back, which has hindered her international career.
At the conclusion of the 2023–24 campaign, Le Tissier and Ella Toone—who has been named the new vice captain—were chosen United’s joint Players’ Player of the Year. Zelem had no official deputy before, but Hayley Ladd would frequently assume the armband in the skipper’s infrequent absences.
Toone signed a similarly long contract in 2022 that extends until the conclusion of the following season, while Le Tissier signed a new one in April that continues until 2028. The latter has scored 53 goals in 164 appearances for United, making him the club’s all-time leading appearance maker and goal scorer.
