Third Premier League Club handed points deduction after defaulting On transfer Payments

Sheffield United, amidst recent weeks, finds itself among the ranks of Premier League teams facing point deductions, becoming the third in line. The Yorkshire-based club incurred a loss of two points, a repercussion set to take effect in the upcoming season as they transition to the EFL. Presently languishing nine points adrift from safety at the Premier League’s bottom, Sheffield United faces grim prospects for avoiding relegation this year. Should they descend to the Championship, their next season will kick off with a disadvantage of minus two points. Furthermore, an additional two points hang in suspension until the culmination of the subsequent EFL season.

The decision, meted out by an impartial disciplinary committee, stems from infractions during the 2022–2023 season, notably related to payment defaults towards other clubs. The EFL, in a statement, underscored that these defaults amassed over a period exceeding 550 days. To ensure compliance, a stipulation specifies that the suspension takes effect should the club default on payments owed to another club under transfer or compensation agreements, extending beyond five business days from the due date. Sheffield United has also committed to covering the £310,455 EFL costs.
