Marc Cucurella, initially met with skepticism regarding his selection for Luis de la Fuente’s squad, emerged as one of Spain’s standout performers. Before Spain’s opening match, a 3-0 victory over Croatia, Gary Neville had publicly questioned Cucurella’s inclusion, describing him as the team’s weak link.
On June 15, Neville remarked on ITV, “We weren’t expecting him to play.” Despite Cucurella’s late-season performances for Chelsea being underwhelming, Neville acknowledged his tenacity and aggressiveness, though he found the transfer fee surprising. Neville expressed doubt about Spain’s defense, specifically pointing to Cucurella’s position as a potential vulnerability.
However, after Spain clinched the title, Cucurella and Rodriguez took to social media to respond. Rodriguez posted on Instagram, “How was your night, @gneville2?” alongside a picture of Cucurella celebrating the victory. Cucurella shared a celebratory photo with a snippet of Neville’s critique, captioned, “We went all the way Gary. I appreciate your help.”
Speaking to TVE after the final at Berlin’s Olympiastadion, Cucurella reflected on the team’s journey. “Nobody gave us a chance,” he said. “We stayed quiet and ended up winning the Euros. We showed we can play and endure hardship as a team. We arrived as a group of players, and now we leave as a family.”
