Real Madrid targeting Rodri as midfield priority following Champions League exit

Real Madrid has shifted its focus to reinforcing the midfield as they begin planning for the 2025/26 season following their elimination from the Champions League. According to Cadena SER, the club’s top target for the midfield position is Manchester City’s Rodri, who is seen as the ideal replacement for the void left by Toni Kroos.
With their Champions League campaign now concluded, Real Madrid has a clearer picture of their financial situation, including incoming revenue and player bonus obligations. The club is also expecting significant earnings from the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, which is expected to provide some financial breathing room for reinforcements.
Rodri, a 28-year-old Spanish international and Ballon d’Or contender, is viewed as the “dream signing” for Real Madrid. Despite his importance to Manchester City and a contract running until 2027, the Spanish giants believe a move could be negotiated, potentially facilitated by the presence of Dani Carvajal, a close friend of Rodri’s from their time with the national team.
However, Real Madrid is cautious about Rodri’s ongoing recovery from a serious knee injury, which might impact his performance upon return. Although Rodri remains the top priority, the club is also exploring alternative options, including Martin Zubimendi. Nevertheless, sources within Madrid are skeptical about Zubimendi’s suitability, and Arsenal is reportedly making progress in negotiations with the Real Sociedad midfielder.
As Real Madrid intensifies its planning for the next season, the midfield remains a key focus area, with Rodri being the marquee name they hope to bring to the Santiago Bernabeu.
