Premier League clubs expect points deduction for big-spending team as outcome set for next month
Everton faced a 10-point deduction earlier in the season due to breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules, and they’re currently awaiting the outcome of their appeal. However, their troubles might not end there, as another club could soon be penalized in a similar manner.
In November, Everton was hit with the initial 10-point penalty for failing to meet the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations. Despite appealing this decision, a final verdict is still pending. Adding to their woes, on January 15, the club was charged again for financial misconduct, this time alongside Nottingham Forest.
Reports suggest that Nottingham Forest is likely to be the next club facing point deductions, with a decision expected in the coming weeks. The club’s lavish spending spree since their return to the Premier League, which saw them sign 43 players, has drawn scrutiny. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that 30 of these signings were made in their debut season back in the top flight, where they managed to secure a 16th place finish, narrowly avoiding relegation by four points.
If Nottingham Forest indeed faces point deductions, it will further complicate the relegation battle in the Premier League. The outcomes of both Everton and Nottingham Forest’s cases hold significant implications for several clubs in the top tier of English football, potentially reshaping the league table and the fortunes of various teams.
