“No fighting spirit in that team” “Poch has no clue” – Didier Drogba criticises Mauricio Pochettino and names the ideal alternative for Chelsea
Didier Drogba claims Mauricio Pochettino ‘doesn’t know what he wants to achieve’ at Chelsea and believes the club should make a surprise move to rehire Jose Mourinho for a third time.
Despite spending more than £1 billion on new recruits since Todd Boehly’s arrival, the west London giants sit 11th in the Premier League rankings halfway through the season.
Back-to-back defeats to Liverpool and Wolves have only added to the pressure on Pochettino, and some fans are calling for Chelsea to cut their losses on the 51-year-old, as they did with Graham Potter after only six months.
Chelsea’s leadership acknowledges the club’s challenges, but there are no preparations to replace Pochettino, who is now under contract until 2025.
However, the former Chelsea striker has lost patience with Pochettino and believes the Argentine’s bad body language gives the impression of a dead man walking.
“I was so disappointed with Chelsea’s performance against Wolves,” Petit told compare.bet, after Pochettino’s men were booed off the pitch at the final whistle.
‘They appeared disorganised; they were tactically a jumble, with little fighting spirit, communication, or character. I felt sympathy for the Chelsea fans.
I was wondering why you would put [Christopher] Nkunku up front as a lone striker. Does he even know what Nkunku is excellent at? In Germany and France, it is well known that he cannot and has never played alone up front. He excels in the 10 or two up front, although he is completely incapable of playing that position.
‘Pochettino refuses to tailor his tactics to his players, and the team’s makeup just does not make sense at the time.
‘He has no idea what he wants to achieve, and his body language is terrible; he appears to be on his way out.’
Following his dismissal at Roma, Mourinho has emerged as one of the bookmakers’ favourites to take over as Chelsea manager if Pochettino is fired.
Mourinho, a Chelsea fan favourite, led the team to eight championships in two spells in west London, and Petit feels the self-proclaimed Special One can ‘come in and repair’ their difficulties.
‘I’ve read talk that Mourinho could come in with John Terry as his assistant,’ the 1998 World Cup champion said.
‘When you think about it, it could be rather interesting. He would give the team character and personality.
They are currently a broken team, and he could be the man to bring it back together.
‘I honestly believe they require a manager who has a clear vision of what needs to be done with the players that are present.
‘They need to stop buying players and instead focus on developing what they already have.
‘Chelsea need to build an identity because they do not currently have one.’
