Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed significant interest in acquiring Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino this summer, according to a report by the Spanish publication Sport.

Arteta has reportedly reached out to the Spanish international directly, outlining his vision for Merino’s role within the Arsenal squad. This direct communication appears to have piqued Merino’s interest, making him open to the possibility of joining the Premier League side.

Barcelona has also shown interest in Merino. However, their ongoing financial difficulties might impede their ability to compete for his signature, thereby enhancing Arsenal’s prospects of securing the midfielder. Merino, who is currently 28 years old, is in the final year of his contract with Real Sociedad. The Basque club is reportedly willing to sell him for approximately €25 million.

Arsenal is keen on bolstering their midfield options, and Merino is regarded as an optimal addition. He has established himself as one of the premier midfielders in Spanish football, consistently earning caps for the national team and delivering strong performances in the European Championship.

In 2021, Real Sociedad’s manager Imanol Alguacil even lauded Merino as the best player in La Liga, a commendation that Merino humbly accepted. Beyond his midfield prowess, Merino has demonstrated a knack for contributing in the attacking third. He concluded the 2023-24 season with eight goals and four assists from 43 appearances, showcasing his offensive capabilities.

Arsenal has been particularly impressed by Merino’s tackling and passing skills, which are viewed as valuable assets for their squad. The club appears poised to make a concerted effort to secure his services in the forthcoming weeks. Additionally, Merino has unfinished business in the Premier League, having previously played for Newcastle United before departing in 2018. Arsenal is ready to provide him with an opportunity to return to England and compete for a league title, further sweetening the prospect of his potential transfer to North London.
