Mauricio Pochettino safe for now but club expect better by summer
Chelsea’s hierarchy is standing by Mauricio Pochettino, despite consecutive defeats to Liverpool and Wolves. However, they are looking for improvements in results and expect Pochettino to demonstrate progress by the end of the season to co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali. There are no plans for a mid-season managerial change, with the club preferring to evaluate Pochettino’s performance over the entire season.
Currently, Chelsea sits 11th in the Premier League standings, but they have the upcoming Carabao Cup Final against Liverpool and an FA Cup fourth-round replay against Aston Villa. Boehly and Eghbali have previously shown similar support to Graham Potter before his dismissal last April, aiming to avoid another mid-season upheaval, as was the case with Frank Lampard.
Pochettino and his coaching staff signed two-year contracts last summer, making any potential dismissal a costly affair for Chelsea, with reported compensation exceeding £10 million. Despite expressing regret to supporters after the 4-2 loss to Wolves and acknowledging the precarious situation, Pochettino has emphasized accountability, stating, “nobody is safe.”
Before the recent setbacks, Chelsea had enjoyed a three-game winning streak in the league and reached the Carabao Cup final. However, criticism has been directed at the club’s new owners and sporting directors for assembling a youthful squad lacking in leadership, physicality, and experience.
While the players are said to largely support Pochettino, there’s a noticeable decline in the atmosphere at Cobham alongside the poor results, with difficulties in team cohesion both on and off the pitch. Pochettino himself has admitted that the current performance level does not match the club’s illustrious history.
