Mason Greenwood has changed his nationality today and now he will play for one of the biggest national teams

Mason Greenwood is potentially looking to kick-start his international career anew, this time with Jamaica, as he remains eligible to switch his allegiance from England despite not having represented Jamaica internationally yet.

Greenwood’s club future, clouded by allegations of serious misconduct including attempted rape, controlling behavior, and assault, has gained some clarity after Manchester United’s decision to sever ties with the 21-year-old this week. Following an internal evaluation lasting six months, Manchester United opted to support Greenwood in seeking opportunities elsewhere, with loan deals being more prevalent despite a preference for a permanent transfer.

Roma, among others, has emerged as a potential destination for Greenwood, offering a chance for him to reunite with former manager Jose Mourinho. Talks regarding a loan have also been initiated with Atalanta, Inter, Monaco, and clubs in Germany, Turkey, Spain, and even the Saudi Pro League.

Despite a significant presence in club football, with 135 first-team appearances by the age of 20, Greenwood’s international experience is limited. His England debut in 2020 was marred by a breach of Covid-19 quarantine protocols, resulting in his expulsion from the national team alongside Phil Foden.

Efforts to reintegrate Greenwood into the England setup, including discussions with manager Gareth Southgate, have been hindered by various setbacks, including his arrest and subsequent legal proceedings. There were rumors of discontent within his team regarding media attention despite his non-participation in national team duties.

Greenwood’s potential shift to representing Jamaica stems from his ancestry, with the Jamaica Football Federation expressing interest since 2021. FIFA regulations allow players to switch allegiances as long as they haven’t played more than three senior international matches before turning 21, a provision revised in 2020 to provide more flexibility compared to previous rules.

Therefore, while Greenwood’s past may have been clouded with controversy and missed opportunities on the international stage, his future presents the possibility of a fresh start with Jamaica, should he choose to pursue it within the regulatory framework provided by FIFA.
