Manchester City reach ‘full agreement’ to re-sign Legend from Barcelona with veteran midfielder making huge financial sacrifice to seal Premier League return
Gundogan will return to the Etihad Stadium just one year after leaving. According to The Athletic, the 33-year-old will sign a one-year contract with City, with the option for an extra 12 months. To ease the transfer, the former Germany international would even forego the remaining two years of his income from Barcelona.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Gundogan made over 50 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona last season and was chosen to the La Liga Team of the Season. However, a change in head coach at the Camp Nou has signaled a new vision, and the veteran midfielder has been informed that he is not part of Hansi Flick’s plans. Gundogan allegedly spoke with Pep Guardiola about his return, and the City manager sanctioned the trade.
Did you know?
Guardiola signed Gundogan his first acquisition as City manager in 2016, and the midfielder went on to make 188 appearances during his first term. During a remarkable seven-year period, he won five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and the Champions League.
What is NEXT FOR CITY?
The defending Premier League winners have had a quiet summer, with Gundogan joining Brazilian international Savinho as their only senior additions thus far. However, their performance in Sunday’s 2-0 victory against Chelsea shown that this club does not require much to be solidly in contention for a fifth consecutive title. They face Ipswich Town at home on Saturday.
