Manchester City is Set to Sign Chelsea outcast player who Pochettino Don’t want to see in his squad
With all the heat on Mauricio Pochettino to fix things after a rough start to life back in London, January was always going to be a busy month for Chelsea. The second transfer window has also come and gone very quickly. After half of his first season back in England, the manager still hasn’t won over the people.
Not only are the performers getting worse since the new owners took over in May 2022, but the owners are also getting some bad press. Since then, things have mostly gone downhill, and people don’t trust the present group as they try to fix the damage that has already been done.
The next window will be a chance for Pochettino and Chelsea to make sure that they get better results in both areas. But because people have spent so much in the last 18 months, there may not be much room for deals if there aren’t any sales.
Here is the latest news from the market, along with a unique look at what some moves could mean for the club and Pochettino. Because that’s how Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital always start, with another kid.
Even though more experience is being asked for, Chelsea is said to be interested in Ronnie Edwards, a 20-year-old defender for Peterborough United, and will likely make another offer for him next month. Chelsea has sometimes been interested in Edwards, and they had bids turned down for the player in 2022, according to football.london.
The Athletic say that, besides Edwards, there are also other young players from South America being considered. It’s more possible that Edwards will play, though, since he is already well-known in the English game. The League One starlet has been capped by England at both the Under-19 and Under-20 levels.
Edwards fits a lot of what Chelsea is trying to do, but there are also questions about many of the present group that are also being asked about him. Edwards is one of the best young defenders in the country and has already played more than 100 games for his team before he turns 21. However, there are some concerns.
Not so much Edwards himself, but what his signature would mean. That is what could go wrong. The kids that play for Chelsea are already very good, and some of the brightest stars of the future are already there. Cobham, La Cobham, has been a good way to get top talent for years but is still not used enough.
For years, Cobham has helped players grow, and most of the time, those players have gone on to do better than expensive Bridge signings. Since then, they have moved away from the Blues, which has made the sales look silly and the lack of a route even scarier. Not that Edwards would be the same, but it’s scary when a club signs a young player without giving club-developed players the same chances.
Some players, like Bashir Humphreys, are already better than Edwards. He is tall, has two feet, and is a well-known player in the second division. He wouldn’t cost you a dime. Last year, Chelsea made an offer of £10 million for Edwards, but it was turned down. It doesn’t make much sense to sign a player when the team already has someone who fits the bill.
Chelsea hasn’t let this kind of thing stop them lately, though, and they will use the “pure profit” reason to sell local players again in January and next summer. It might leave extra money for someone like Edwards who will be worth a lot more in the future if they get the right price.
But if Edwards came at Humphreys’ cost, the question of what the point of Cobham is has to be asked again.
Manchester City is said to be interested in Ian Maatsen because he wants to stay at Cobham and help undervalued young players already in the system. There are several players that Pep Guardiola’s team is considering, including the 21-year-old. This is true even though Josko Gvardiol and Nathan Ake have been playing on the left side this season.
He has played as a winger, an attacking player, and sometimes a wingback, but not as often as he likes to play as a left back. Maatsen has been on the bench for most of the season because he is almost always used as a replacement. The club is likely to try to sell him next month.
London Football News says that Chelsea just don’t get it. In the summer, they could have let Marc Cucurella go, even if it was only on a short-term loan. Instead, they played him in a League Cup match, tied him up in the cup, and then had to pay his salaries. Maatsen, on the other hand, has been thrown out.
Even though he was always on the bench, Chelsea has not given him the chance to play with the first team that his skills deserve. Even without Ben Chilwell, there has been no place for Maatsen, and Pochettino hasn’t given him much of a chance, whether it’s because of his height or because he’s trying out new tactics in a big way.
Ake standing out at the Etihad Stadium on his way to helping City win the treble last year was a good reminder. If that wasn’t enough, Maatsen moving to join Guardiola would be regretted in about 30 seconds, if that.
Another big problem with moving players for cash is that it doesn’t make sense for Chelsea to let their assets lose value and then sell them for the least amount of money possible. Maatsen cost £30 million over the summer, but he has never played in the Premier League before. If, just for fun, he had to be sold, one year of playing time would make the price go up and make the club look better.
It can’t be said any other way. What is happening with Cobham’s players being used as numbers is very scary, and it doesn’t look like it will lead to any real sports benefits either. It’s a very strange lose-lose situation.
