On Sunday, Manchester United seemed to be cruising into the FA Cup final for the second year in a row, leading Coventry City 3-0 at Wembley Stadium.
Against all odds, the Championship team staged a spectacular comeback to bring the game to overtime.
Ellis Simms equalized 19 minutes before halftime, and Callum O’Hare’s deflected shot cut the lead to one.
Haji Wright completed the comeback by converting a contentious penalty in the fifth minute of injury time, throwing the Coventry supporters into a frenzy and pushing the game to extra time.
That was not the end of the drama, however. Mark Robins’ team felt they had pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in FA Cup history when Victor Torp scored past Andre Onana in the 121st minute, but VAR ruled it out for a little offside.
That match proceeded to penalties, and United won 4-2 despite Casemiro missing his team’s first penalty attempt.
Onana stopped from Callum O’Hare before Ben Sheaf’s shot went over the crossbar.
That left Rasmus Hojlund with the opportunity to earn United’s spot in the final against Manchester City, and he did not disappoint.
Most of United’s players shown class by quickly comforting their crestfallen opponents after Hojlund’s penalty went into the goal.
