“It was a huge disappointment.” I simply wanted to join Manchester United because I am a fan. But when I went to Old Trafford, the club did something disgusting: they signed him instead of me. Gabriel Martinelli discusses Manchester United’s failed trial, stating that it causes anxiety.
Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli recently reflected on his experience of an unsuccessful trial at Manchester United during his youth. Martinelli, now 22 years old, had multiple opportunities to impress at United during his time in their academy, with his last attempt occurring when he was 17 years old. Despite his efforts, the Brazilian winger was not offered a place in Old Trafford’s academy while playing for the Brazilian fourth-tier team, Ituano.
Speaking about his trials at a club as prestigious as Manchester United, Martinelli acknowledged the pressure he felt, expressing his disappointment at not succeeding. However, he maintains a philosophical perspective, believing that everything unfolds according to a greater purpose. He stated to ESPN Brazil, “I had hoped for a successful trial. And with a club the size of Manchester United, you get nervous. But everything happens for a purpose. It was not where I was intended to be.”
Subsequently, Martinelli found his home at Arsenal in 2019 and has since become a key player under the guidance of manager Mikel Arteta. With seven goals and three assists in the current season, Martinelli’s contributions have helped propel Arsenal to third place in the Premier League standings. In contrast, Manchester United currently sits in sixth place, trailing five points behind Aston Villa, whom they narrowly defeated 2-1 in their recent fixture.
