Man City Star Erling Haaland hits back at increased scrutiny over low touch-count in games
Erling Haaland has stated that no one acknowledges how many touches he makes when he scores, with the Norwegian stating that even if he scored nine goals in a game, he aims for ten.
Despite scoring a Premier League-record 52 goals last season and leading the league with 25 this season, Haaland has faced criticism for his low touch count during games.
Speaking on the Men in Blazers podcast, Haaland stated: “There has always been this debate over how many times I should touch the ball.” When I score, no one talks about it, but when I don’t, people start mentioning my touches. This is a part of my existence; people will speak about me, and I have no influence over what they say.
“I simply have to focus on what I need to do on the field, and my job isn’t to be like Rodri and dominate the game; it’s to be in the box and complete the assaults. That’s my priority, and I don’t care what others say.
“It’s about helping the team win. Finally, you may play football without touching the ball, which may seem strange to some. You can achieve it through motions, mental processes, and awareness. It’s a significant aspect of the game. It isn’t just about touching the ball. Of course, you have to touch the ball, but I understand my job on this squad.”
Haaland seemed disappointed when he was substituted after scoring four goals in last Saturday’s 5-1 victory over Wolves, but he was relieved his replacement kept the goals coming. “I was upset over something entirely different. I was delighted when Julián [Álvarez] scored. I’d want to score more goals, but I wasn’t upset about being subbed off,” he explained. “Think about it: suppose I score nine points in a game, right? It’s good. But imagine ten. Isn’t it better? Everybody agrees with me.
The 23-year-old is confident he can improve. “Obviously, I am still evolving. “I’m still the same player, but I’m a better version of myself,” Haaland explained. “I’m in the ideal situation since I’m still young and Pep [Guardiola] is in control of me. I’m doing great and liking it. I’m happy.
“There are a lot of tactical things to learn when you join a Pep Guardiola club. It’s not simple; he’s always coming up with something new, so you have to adapt and acquire new skills. I’m doing well on this side, and my physical condition is improving.”
Haaland picked another athlete he would want to emulate. “Michael Jordan [basketball player],” he answered. “Being him would be intriguing since his mindset is next level.”
Guardiola trained his players on a dry field this week to preparation for Saturday’s trip to Fulham, in case the pitch is as dry as it was during City’s 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest last month.
