“He was upset with me that he wasn’t in the Starting XI despite Cole Palmer and Raheem Sterling suspension, but I have spoken with him- Pochettino Said Chelsea Star is Angry for not Starting him Yesterday
Chelsea took an early lead through Mykhailo Mudryk, but were pulled back by Michael Olise on the stroke of half-time and appeared to be heading for another disappointing stalemate until second-half substitute Madueke was taken down inside the box.
The referee first waved play on, but VAR sent him to the pitch-side monitor and gave a penalties, which Madueke duly dispatched with elegance.
Under Pochettino, Madueke has struggled for game time, and the Argentine coach felt his ‘upset’ winger was out to prove a point in his brief cameo, and he was pleased with the youngster’s answer.
‘I want all the guys who aren’t involved to come at me,’ Pochettino said after the game.
‘I like it since we won the game,’ says the player. He received the penalty and converted it. We are not a charitable organisation. We are a football team, and we must perform.
We are here to assist the players in performing. Sometimes we have to be tough and show them reality by holding up a mirror and saying, “Come on, that is not the player who is going to perform.”
‘We have an incredible bunch of players who are all really kind people. However, competing in Chelsea is not the same as competing in another club. It’s about winning, about lifting trophies, about respecting the club’s past.
‘How do you show your respect? Go inside and fight. The first step is to adopt the proper mindset and to respect the club’s history.’
‘He showed he was furious with me and frustrated with me because he didn’t play a lot, also because he was hurt,’ he continued.
‘I believe he stated, “Now I’m going to show the coach that he can trust me.” They [the players] must demonstrate that they are trustworthy.
‘Mentality is quite crucial. You can’t just fiddle with your abilities. It’s tough to perform if you don’t have the appropriate mindset and approach every day, in training and in games. You have to be willing to battle for yourself and your team, and it was wonderful to feel this enthusiasm both during the game and at the finish.
‘This is how he must act every single day. We are not awful people who refuse to play with some players. Only you can connect with your skill if you have the proper mindset.’
