Former Manchester United defender who left the club this summer has been forced to retire after a horror injury
Raphael Varane, a former Manchester United defender, is in significant risk of having his two-year contract with Como canceled just one month in, according to reports.
Varane was among several talents that departed Manchester United as free agents on June 30. Brandon Williams and Anthony Martial both left, and Omari Forson also left after turning down a new contract offer from the club.
Varane was not eager to secure a rumored move to Saudi Arabia. Instead, the French veteran chose to remain in Europe, signing with Serie A club Como.
Cesc Fabregas, a Spanish great, manages Como, and the club launched an aggressive summer recruitment push after returning to Serie A for the first time in 21 years.
Aside from Varane, the Italians signed Pepe Reina, Sergi Roberto, Alberto Moreno, and Andrea Belotti, all experienced players.
Maximo Perrone (Manchester City) and Nico Paz (Real Madrid) were among the newcomers.
Varane, on the other hand, is yet to benefit from the left-field shift, having sustained an injury during his Coppa Italia debut against Sampdoria.
Varane’s injury is causing much uncertainty, with some reports stating it is a knee issue and others suggesting it is a thigh problem.
In any event, Varane remains on the sidelines, and the news from Italy suggests his Como career may be done.
Varane was not included in Como’s 25-man roster for the Serie A season, which was confirmed after the transfer deadline on Friday night.
Como considers canceling Varane’s contract.
According to Sport Mediaset, Raphael Varane has been omitted from Como’s list of 25 players turned over to Lega Serie A for the 2024/25 season.
The experienced French defender, who formerly played for Real Madrid and Manchester United, signed as a free agent in the summer but was injured before the season began.
‘Varane suffered an injury on his Coppa Italia debut against Sampdoria, and Como is now considering canceling his contract.
Varane would not be able to join Como’s Serie A side until after the January transfer window.
Instead of waiting six months, Como is reportedly considering releasing the 31-year-old just five weeks into his two-year contract.
Varane had high expectations for the “very exciting” Como transfer.
Varane already talked with Manchester United’s official club media on the Como transfer.
The defender revealed that playing for Fabregas, a frequent opponent from their time at Real Madrid and Barcelona, was a major pull.
Furthermore, Varane described the Como project as “very exciting,” but it now looks to have soured.
“At first, I was intrigued to learn more about the concept, and then I instantly recognized that it was unique,” Varane stated two days after confirming his transfer to Como in late July. “This was unlike any other offer I would received, therefore I wanted to learn more.
“The more I learned about the project, the more intriguing it got, giving me a new perspective on what I wanted to pursue. When the job came up, it quickly rose to the top of the priority list, and we were able to complete the transaction.
“I am quite delighted. There is a lot to accomplish, and it is quite thrilling. I have a lot of high-level experience, and the opportunity to share that expertise and assist a club grow and eventually reach the top is quite exciting.
“I will encounter Cesc again, but not as an opponent this time. His playing philosophy and love for football appeal to me much.
“When we chatted, it was really simple to understand one other, therefore I am hoping for very good outcomes.” In any event, I am coming with a lot of humility to assist the squad and the club succeed.”
