Former Chelsea star is set to leave Barcelona on a free transfer this summer
After a two-year stint with Barcelona, Marcos Alonso is set to leave the club on a free transfer following the conclusion of the current season. The 33-year-old has faced a challenging campaign marred by injuries, notably missing all La Liga action since October due to a back problem sustained in December.
During his inaugural season with Barca after departing Chelsea in 2022, the Spanish international played a pivotal role, making 37 appearances across all competitions and contributing to the team’s La Liga triumph. Initially signing a one-year deal, Alonso extended his stay until the summer of 2024 with a new contract penned in January of the previous year.
However, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Alonso’s time at Camp Nou is drawing to a close this summer due to persistent injury setbacks. Eager to conclude his Barcelona tenure on a positive note, Alonso, now recovered from his injury, made a substitute appearance in the 1-0 La Liga victory over Las Palmas on March 30.
Barcelona’s upcoming fixture sees them facing PSG in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, with the first leg scheduled to take place in Paris on April 10. As Alonso prepares to bid farewell to Barcelona, his availability for this crucial match remains uncertain.
