Former Chelsea and Bayern Boss Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as the manager of Manchester United this evening after the sacking of Erig Ten Hag
Details of a secret meeting between Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Thomas Tuchel in Monaco have emerged, suggesting that the former Chelsea manager may be a contender for the Manchester United position. Tuchel, who left Bayern Munich after a brief three-month tenure, is speculated to be in line for the role following his departure at the end of the season. Despite leading Bayern to the Champions League semifinals, Tuchel couldn’t prevent Bayer Leverkusen from clinching the Bundesliga title.
Erik ten Hag, currently managing Manchester United, finds his position uncertain despite leading the team to an FA Cup victory against Manchester City last month. Under Ten Hag’s guidance, United finished eighth in the Premier League but secured a spot in the Europa League. His contract is set to expire next year, and rumors from Germany suggest the club may consider a change in leadership.
Christian Falk of BILD Sport reports that Tuchel and Ratcliffe discussed potential strategies for Tuchel to take over from Ten Hag at Old Trafford during their meeting in Monaco. Although Tuchel is not immediately looking for a new role this summer, he outlined his vision for the team, including revitalizing players like Jadon Sancho and Mason Mount, drawing from his successful collaboration with Antonio Rudiger at Chelsea.
Louis van Gaal, the Netherlands manager, weighed in on Ten Hag’s situation in an interview with Sky Sports ahead of Euro 2024. Van Gaal, who also managed Manchester United, believes Ten Hag deserves more time to prove himself. He reflected on his own tenure, noting his FA Cup win and emphasizing the importance of patience and continuity for a manager.
Van Gaal stated, “Erik has won the FA Cup and secured Champions League qualification in his first year. I don’t think you should fire him; he needs more time.” He acknowledged the criticisms but also highlighted Ten Hag’s achievements, suggesting that the Dutch manager’s efforts should be recognized and supported.
In response to speculations about his future, Ten Hag expressed confidence in the ongoing project at Manchester United. He emphasized the progress made since his arrival, stating, “We’re building a team for the future. The squad is growing and succeeding; ultimately, winning trophies is what matters.” Ten Hag remains focused on long-term goals, asserting that while the current achievements are positive, there is a need for continued improvement.
Ten Hag concluded, “Two trophies in two years is not bad. Having reached three finals is commendable, but we must aim higher. If I am no longer wanted here, I will continue my pursuit of winning titles elsewhere, as that has been the hallmark of my career.”
