Holders Manchester City defeated Chelsea 1-0 on Saturday thanks to a late Bernardo Silva goal, advancing to the FA Cup final after an exciting end-to-end Wembley semi-final.

Silva sidefooted home in the 84th minute after Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic saved a strike from former Blues midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.

There were chances for Cole Palmer, a 21-year-old Manchester City striker who scored four league goals against Everton on Monday, and Noni Madueke.

The showpiece game on May 25 will pit City against Manchester United or second-tier Coventry City, both of whom play on Sunday.

The outcome provided some relief for Pep Guardiola’s team, who was defeated on penalties by Real Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinals in midweek.

Silva, who missed a penalty in the shootout against Real, said he was “extremely thrilled” after a trying week for everyone, including himself.

“The nice thing is that in football, if you play for Manchester City, you play every three days, so after two to three days, you have a chance to avenge yourself and make things right.”

City are still on track for a double, sitting two points ahead at the top of the Premier League.

Chelsea, whose last visit to Wembley Stadium resulted in a League Cup final loss by a late Liverpool goal in extra time two months ago, missed some of their finest opportunities.

Nicolas Jackson, from Senegal, was especially extravagant.

In the ninth minute, he sent the first shot on goal, but Stefan Ortega in the City goal easily gathered it.

Early in the second half, Jackson had two opportunities to score, but Ortega intercepted both.

A last-gasp free shot from replacement Mykhailo Mudryk went over the bar, capping a dreadful day for Chelsea and manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Chelsea have now lost six of their previous eight FA Cup matches against Manchester City, including the third round last season.
