The 20-year-old has rapidly established himself in Mauricio Pochettino’s first squad, appearing in all but one of Chelsea’s 27 games this season, with 23 starts.
He was projected for big things after good loan periods at Huddersfield and Brighton, and he is now in contention for a place in England’s Euro 2024 squad, having made his international debut in October.
Last summer, Liverpool, Brighton, Manchester City, and Tottenham expressed interest in Colwill, but Pochettino was keen to keep him, and he signed a new contract until 2029.
However, talkSPORT reports that the Reds are still monitoring Colwill’s status and may make a move, considering their need for defensive reinforcements.
Joel Matip is out for the rest of the season, while left-backs Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas are still sidelined with shoulder problems, as is Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is anticipated to recover from his knee injury by the end of the month.
With the Premier League leaders’ fixtures piling up, a new defender is undoubtedly required, and Colwill’s versatility as a centre-back and left-back will appeal to Jurgen Klopp in particular.
There is no hint that Chelsea would be eager to sell him, but as a homegrown talent, any transfer would be pure profit.
This would help to balance the books for Todd Boehly and co., who are concerned about breaking FFP laws, and it is for this reason that fellow local stars Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja have been linked with moves abroad.
In the meanwhile, Colwill is expected to play in Chelsea’s crucial Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Middlesbrough on Tuesday.
