United was said to have the upper hand in signing Neves in January after Benfica let Alvaro Fernandez join the Portuguese team on loan with an option to buy. In response, Benfica said in a statement, “Sport Lisboa e Benfica denies the existence of any right of preference over its player Joao Neves.”
