Deal signed: Paperworks and official announcement soon, Arsenal set to complete first summer transfer in coming days
Arsenal has concluded the 2023/2024 Premier League season with an impressive defensive record, but the club is keen on strengthening its defense further during the upcoming summer transfer window. Recognizing the importance of this move, Manager Mikel Arteta and Sporting Director Edu are particularly focused on securing a new left-back.
This urgency is heightened by the possibility of current players Oleksandr Zinchenko and Jakub Kiwior attracting interest from Bayern Munich, which could lead to their departure. In response, Arsenal is preparing to make a renewed effort to secure a top-notch defender after their initial offer was declined.
The target for Arsenal’s reinforcement is Ferdi Kadioglu, who currently plays for Fenerbahce and is wearing the No. 7 jersey. Reports suggest that Arsenal’s initial bid of £17 million was rejected, with Fenerbahce seeking a fee exceeding €30 million (£26 million) for the Turkey international. Kadioglu is presently participating in the UEFA Euro 2024, which has brought him into the spotlight.
During the 2023/24 season, Kadioglu made significant contributions to Fenerbahce, appearing in 51 matches, scoring three goals, and providing five assists. His role as an inverted left-back showcases his technical prowess, a position requiring considerable skill. Despite Fenerbahce’s new manager, Jose Mourinho, wanting to keep Kadioglu, the club appears more willing to sell him, especially after acquiring Levent Mercan as his replacement.
The 24-year-old Kadioglu has drawn comparisons to Portugal international Joao Cancelo, known for his exceptional technical abilities and his capability to play as an inverted left-back. Arteta has previously shown interest in Cancelo, who is currently with Manchester City.
Further complicating Arsenal’s pursuit, Borussia Dortmund has also made an official approach for Kadioglu. Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu reports that this development comes amid speculation that Arsenal had already agreed on personal terms with Kadioglu for a move to the Emirates Stadium. However, with Ian Maatsen potentially moving to Aston Villa, Dortmund now poses a significant challenge in the race to sign the Turkey international.
Arsenal’s efforts to secure Kadioglu underscore their commitment to enhancing their defensive lineup, aiming to build on their recent successes and address any potential gaps left by departing players. The club’s proactive approach in the transfer market reflects their ambition to maintain a strong and competitive squad for the forthcoming season.
