Confirmed from trusted Italian journalist this evening -21yrs old Chelsea Star has left Stanford Bridge this evening to Join Borussia Dortmund on a loan Deal with £40 million Buy option

Fabrizio Romano claims that a Chelsea player has just signed a new contract with the club.

He announced on Twitter that Ian Maatsen has signed a two-year extension to his contract at Stamford Bridge, however it does include a release clause.

Maatsen is set to join Borussia Dortmund this week, following a verbal agreement between the two parties on a season-long loan contract.

Chelsea fans may have been perplexed by the transfer, especially given that no price was reported as compulsory at the end of his time with the German club.

However, Romano has now stated that a release clause would be included in his contract after his time with the Bundesliga club expires this summer.

“Ian Maatsen signs new Chelsea contract until June 2027, two-year extension… and it will include a release clause!” he remarked. The clause will be in effect beginning in the summer of 2024.

Maatsen has signed a new deal.
“Maatsen will fly to Dortmund tonight to join BVB on loan, medical tomorrow as revealed.”

Chelsea will now rely primarily on two of their current left-back options to share the majority of minutes for the remainder of the season.

However, it should be emphasised that neither Ben Chilwell nor Marc Cucurella are now fit, thus there is no obvious choice to play there.

Levi Colwill, a centre-back in his debut season at Stamford Bridge, has played there for the majority of the games up to this point.

While he certainly appears to be better suited to being at the heart of defence, the England international has done well when asked there and is becoming more at ease there as the season progresses.
