Manchester United is reportedly considering Real Madrid custodian Andriy Lunin as a possible successor for Andre Onana.
According to Nacional, Manchester United has made an offer for Lunin ahead of the forthcoming summer transfer season.
Lunin has impressed during his time at Real Madrid this season, filling in brilliantly for the injured Thibaut Courtois, who is out with an ACL injury.
Despite his strong performances, Lunin is aware that Courtois would most likely resume his role as the first-choice custodian upon his return, forcing him to explore a move to another club.
Manchester United’s interest in Lunin comes as they consider their options for their current number one custodian, Andre Onana, who has had a dismal first season with the club.
After an excellent Champions League spell with Inter Milan, Onana joined Manchester United last summer for a significant fee of €51 million plus €4 million in bonuses.
Expectations were high for the 27-year-old custodian, particularly following his outstanding exploits in the Champions League, where he helped Inter Milan reach the final.
However, Onana’s debut season with Manchester United was hampered by errors, albeit showing indications of improvement in 2024.
He has been chastised for multiple expensive errors, particularly in Manchester United’s Champions League group stage games against Galatasaray, Copenhagen, and Bayern Munich.
According to reports in Germany, Bayern Munich is interested in signing Onana as a long-term replacement for veteran custodian Manuel Neuer, who will turn 38 this year.
Meanwhile, Lunin’s Real Madrid contract expires in 2025, making him a realistic alternative for Manchester United if they chose to pursue a move.
The prospective purchase of Lunin might provide Manchester United with a reliable custodian option as they seek to bolster their roster ahead of the new season.
