Chelsea ‘set to sell’ two star players during summer transfer window in bid to comply with FFP

Chelsea is reportedly contemplating offloading two key players in the upcoming summer transfer window to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations. Since being acquired by the Todd Boehly-led Clearlake Capital consortium in 2022, the club has made a substantial £1 billion investment in player acquisitions. Despite hefty signings like Marc Cucurella, Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, and Raheem Sterling, Chelsea’s on-field performance has fallen short, currently sitting at 11th place in the Premier League standings following a draw against Burnley at Stamford Bridge. This places them at risk of violating the Premier League’s financial regulations, with Everton and Nottingham Forest already facing penalties this season. To address this, Chelsea is reportedly contemplating selling captain Reece James and midfielder Conor Gallagher, potentially bringing in an additional £100 million in revenue.

Although Reece James has been a key figure for Chelsea in recent seasons, injuries have hampered his playing time this season, culminating in surgery in December, with his return to training only happening at the start of the month.

In the aftermath of the Burnley draw, manager Mauricio Pochettino expressed his discontent, highlighting the team’s lack of energy, hunger, and defensive solidity, emphasizing the need for unity and intensity both with and without the ball. Despite acknowledging the team’s attacking prowess, Pochettino stressed the importance of defensive resilience, which was lacking in the match.

Looking ahead, Chelsea will face Manchester United at Stamford Bridge in their next Premier League fixture on Thursday night.
