Chelsea Manager Mouricio Pochettino has been Sacked this Evening in shocking scene after before Thier FA clash with Leicester City Tomorrow and his replacement has been named

Mauricio Pochettino may be on a collision path with Chelsea’s owners over the club’s decision to hire Bernardo Cueva, and he insists he will determine whether the incoming set-piece coach will stand on the touchline.

The Blues have agreed to pay Brentford approximately £750,000 in compensation and have tasked Cueva with establishing a new set-piece department at the club.

Chelsea has never employed a specialised set-piece coach, with keeper coach Toni Jimenez in charge, and Pochettino has previously downplayed the importance of such a position.

However, Chelsea is one of the few Premier League sides without a specialist coach for the position, with Arsenal’s Nicolas Jover and Aston Villa’s Austin MacPhee being visible and loud on the touchline, frequently yelling instructions before set-pieces.

While Pochettino claims he supports Cueva’s appointment, the concept was not his, and the Argentine is clear that he will decide if the set-piece coach plays an active role in games.

‘I am the head coach, and I will determine if some individuals will be with me or not, and whether or not to add more people to the touchline,’ Pochettino stated.

“Sometimes I work on them, and sometimes Jesus Perez [his helper] does. We are a coaching staff that already focuses on set pieces. We’re not just working in the gym or the tactical area.

He went on to say, ‘[Cueva’s arrival] is the idea of the owner and sporting directors, and we are very supportive.

Chelsea manager, Mauricio Pochettino
Pochettino has previously discounted the necessity of set-piece coaches.
‘We are aware that the club wishes to establish a global space for set pieces to strengthen the two persons here. If any people come here to share their knowledge, help us, and improve, we welcome them. We can’t go against things that can help us improve and possibly win games.

Pochettino has questioned the importance of professional set-piece coaches, stating, “We work a lot on set-pieces.” Following that, it comes down to the player’s quality. It is all about the takers.

‘We do not have an expert. Maybe Chilly [Ben Chilwell] is decent at delivery, but we don’t have a specialist. If you want to be good at set-pieces, we work hard. But you’ll need good takers.

‘When you have good takers, and Wolves have them, as do Manchester City and other clubs. It is not due to the work. We work similarly. However, the challenge is to find good takers.

We have specialists [coaches]. We are the coaching staff in charge of everything. You can have a specialisation and promote them. Alternatively, you might have the specialist without promoting them. It depends on how you intend to promote the concept of working on set-pieces.

‘We have a specialist, a group of analysts for set-pieces, coaching personnel, and we work hard. The next consideration is quality. We were now discussing how to find a solid specialty [player] for next season.

Look at West Ham before and after. What has changed? After and before? It is not the same. The taker is [James] Ward-Prowse. Or is he Pochettino, no? Prowsey is a far better taker than me. You can definitely work, just like West Ham did. However, when you add a player like him, the percentage increases. That’s football. Football belongs to the players. Not to specialists.
