Bring Him Back: Chelsea supporters want Ian Maatsen’s return after Champions League exploits.

Chelsea supporters have begged the club’s administration not to trade Ian Maatsen after his Champions League exploits for Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night.

Maatsen scored his first Champions League goal as Dortmund advanced to the semi-finals with a 4-2 second-leg victory against Spanish club Atletico Madrid.

According to sources in Germany, the left-back joined Dortmund on loan in the January transfer window and will remain with the German club until the end of the season, with the Bundesliga side hoping to convert it into a permanent move.

Maatsen was expecting to get into the Chelsea first squad this season under Mauricio Pochettino after a successful loan spell at Burnley in 2022-23.

The 22-year-old Dutchman helped Vincent Kompany’s team win the Championship and was chosen to the second-tier Team of the Season.

But Chelsea intended to transfer Maatsen in the summer, and they even accepted a £31.5 million proposal from Burnley before he turned down a permanent move to Turf Moor.

His lack of playing time at Stamford Bridge piqued the curiosity of La Liga heavyweights Barcelona, and Chelsea were said to be open to a January transfer.

He eventually joined German club Dortmund on a six-month loan, and after his brilliant performance against Atletico, Chelsea supporters want him to remain.

Ian Maatsen, what a goal. “Don’t sell him @ChelseaFC,” @CFCDatro said on X, previously known as Twitter.

‘Chelsea are about to sell Ian Maatsen to Borussia Dortmund for £35 million when we’re desperate for a player like him,’ @UberChelseaFC_ said.

‘Maatsen is in the semi-finals as a starting LB in a tournament we can’t enter,’ @matissearmani said. ‘Talent always speaks.’

‘Ian Maatsen was not given an opportunity by Chelsea this season, but now he is scoring CL quarter-final goals,’ @ConnCFC said. “Fair play to him, great player.”

@Celery_brigade, meanwhile, posted a tongue-in-cheek remark, saying: “That Ian Maatsen man looks excellent – we might consider purchasing him.”
