BREAKING: Arsenal on the verge of completing their first big transfer tomorrow morning, paperwork done, agreement reached, jersey number confirmed – announcement tomorrow morning

Arsenal is contemplating a potential acquisition of Nico Williams, the winger from Athletic Bilbao, but may face stiff competition from Barcelona, according to The Athletic.

Williams had a remarkable 2023/24 season with Athletic Bilbao, netting 8 goals and delivering 19 assists across all competitions. His impressive performances were instrumental in securing the Copa del Rey for his team. Additionally, Williams showcased his talent during the European Championship, contributing to three goals, including one in the final against England.

The Athletic suggests that Williams could be a target for Arsenal if the club decides to bolster their wing positions. However, this potential transfer could be complex due to various factors. Notably, Barcelona is also keen on the 22-year-old, adding to the competition.

Athletic Bilbao has set a £49 million release clause for Williams, which Arsenal would need to meet in full to secure his transfer. Moreover, Arsenal might need to offload some of their current attacking players to facilitate the acquisition and raise the necessary funds.

Williams, who excelled predominantly on the left wing last season but can also play on the right, is seen as a promising addition to Arsenal’s squad. Manager Mikel Arteta may view Williams as a valuable asset for enhancing his attacking options in the upcoming season.

Given Williams’ skill set, including his exceptional dribbling and defensive work rate, he could significantly contribute to Arsenal. However, convincing him to move from Athletic Bilbao may require assurances of substantial playing time. With Bukayo Saka firmly established as the right winger, Williams might anticipate playing opportunities primarily on the left wing.

Currently, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard alternate on the left wing for Arsenal. Should Williams join the club, it may necessitate a reassessment of Trossard’s role or consideration of his position as a backup to Saka on the right.
