After the #LIVARS Showdown yesterday…Liverpool player Virgil Van Dijk is to be Punished by PGMOL for making a Gesture and questioning the Referee “Have you been drinking?’

Virgil van Dijk appears to ask the referee, “Have you been drinking?” as he faces punishment.

Virgil van Dijk appeared surprised by referee Chris Kavanagh’s conduct in the high-stakes match between title rivals Liverpool and Arsenal, which ended in a tight tie.

Virgil van Dijk appeared to ask referee Chris Kavanagh if he had been drinking during Liverpool’s hard-fought draw with Arsenal. The Liverpool captain’s query came after a closely contested encounter in which Liverpool came back from a goal down but fell short of capturing all three points despite a great comeback. In one occasion seen on video, Van Dijk appears to simulate carrying a drink while questioning Kavanagh about his sobriety. Van Dijk might have avoided sanctions if Kavanagh had heard his statements and if they were actually what they appeared to be.

Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, was perplexed by the decision-making process. He thought his club should have been granted a penalty, given that they are only one point behind Arsenal at the top of the table.

Klopp said: “The penalty situation is a weird situation, I don’t know if the ref can see it, but you look at it and I’m not sure how you can say it’s not a penalty.” Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher agreed with Klopp, saying Odegaard was fortunate to avoid a penalty.

On the contrary, commentator Gary Neville backed the decision to dismiss the penalty claims. He speculated that Odegaard’s slip may have influenced the non-call by causing his arm to twitch automatically in an attempt to regain equilibrium.
