Arsenal is showing a keen interest in acquiring Viktor Gyokeres, a striker currently playing for Sporting Lisbon. The London club is reportedly prepared to offer around £60 million for the 26-year-old during this summer’s transfer window, according to The Sun.
However, Sporting Lisbon is unwilling to part with Gyokeres for less than his release clause of £85 million. This significant difference in valuation poses a challenge for Arsenal as they seek to strengthen their attacking options.
Gyokeres enjoyed an outstanding 2023-24 season, netting 43 goals and providing 15 assists across 50 matches, playing a pivotal role in Sporting’s Primeira Liga triumph. His impressive performance also saw him finish as the league’s top scorer with 29 goals.
Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, believes that Gyokeres would be a valuable addition to their squad, bolstering their attacking lineup as they prepare for a competitive title challenge. Initially, Arsenal had targeted RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and were ready to meet his £55 million release clause. However, Sesko’s contract extension with Leipzig led Arsenal to explore alternative options, including Gyokeres.
Throughout the past year, Arsenal has closely monitored Gyokeres, confident in his ability to enhance their forward line. Despite this, Sporting Lisbon’s £85 million asking price remains a significant obstacle. Arsenal is hesitant to commit such a large sum for a player who previously played for Coventry City.
Sporting Lisbon is looking to generate funds during this transfer window, but their preference is to sell other players such as defenders Ousmane Diomande and Goncalo Inacio, who have also been linked to Arsenal. Diomande is valued at approximately £50 million, while Inacio has a release clause set at £52 million. Nevertheless, Arsenal’s primary objective remains the acquisition of a new attacker, hoping that Sporting will reduce their demands for Gyokeres.
