Former Chelsea and Bayern Boss Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as the manager of Manchester United this evening after the sacking of Erig Ten Hag
It has been revealed what Thomas Tuchel and Sir Jim Ratcliffe talked about during their private meeting in Monaco. The former Chelsea manager has been extensively connected with the Manchester United job since his left from Bayern Munich at the conclusion of the season.
Tuchel left the German powerhouse after only three months in charge at the Allianz Arena. While the 50-year-old could not prevent Bayer Leverkusen from dominating the Bundesliga, he did guide Bayern to the Champions League semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag’s future at Manchester United remains unknown, despite overcoming Manchester City in the FA Cup final last month. While the Red Devils ended ninth in the Premier League, the Dutchman still managed to win some silverware and qualify for the Europa League.
Ten Hag’s contract expires next year, however it is unknown whether he would return as head coach. If claims from Germany are to be accepted, Manchester United may be preparing for his departure.
According to Christian Falk of BILD Sport, Tuchel met with Ratcliffe in Monaco last Tuesday. According to the article, the German explained his ideas if he were to succeed Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, although it has also been stated that Tuchel does not want to take another position this summer.
Falk adds that Tuchel also discussed how he would reintroduce Jadon Sancho to the team and revive Mason Mount, citing his work with Antonio Rudiger, who found fresh life at Stamford Bridge.
In an interview with Sky Sports ahead of Euro 2024 this summer, Louis van Gaal was asked about his countrymen’s future. The Netherlands manager urged that the Dutchman should spend more time at Manchester United.
“Yes, of course (he should remain), but I also wanted more time,” the 72-year-old explained. “I also won the FA Cup, and no one had won it in the previous 20 years. Erik is already won the FA Cup and has qualified for the Champions League in his first year, therefore I don’t think you should fire him; he needs more time.
“But I may also be more critical; he hasn’t done it brilliantly. You may criticize him, but he has also demonstrated that he is a terrific manager.”
Ten Hag spoke to media following the FA Cup final last month, offering his thoughts on concerns over his future. He added, “I’m working on a project, and we’re right where we want to be. We’re forming a team. When I took over, United was a complete mess.
“We are on our way to building a team for the future. We will deal with the ups and downs. What you see is that the team is growing, and the squad is winning; at the end of the day, it’s about winning trophies.”
Ten Hag said, “Two trophies in two years isn’t awful. Three finals aren’t terrible, but we need to keep progressing. I am not happy with it. We need to do better. If they don’t want me anymore, I’ll go somewhere else to win trophies, which is what I’ve done my entire career.
