Jose Mourinho talks about returning to Chelsea in the face of Mauricio Pochettino’s firing
Chelsea could soon start looking for a new manager as the heat on Mauricio Pochettino mounts.
After suffering a crushing 5-0 loss to local rivals Arsenal, the Blues are presently ninth in the Premier League, hardly a good start for the Argentine at Stamford Bridge. Who may take over should Pochettino go is a topic of much fan conjecture.
Jose Mourinho is one name that keeps coming up. Mourinho has been reticent about a possible third tenure at Chelsea, despite his past successful experiences there.
Everything the Portuguese have stated thus far is included here.
Not concerning ourselves
When reviewing Liverpool’s Champions League final triumph against Tottenham, his future employers, Mourinho was questioned about the possibility of another Chelsea stay in 2019.
He hid his cards well when asked if another stint with Chelsea would be in the works. Mourinho shot back, “We are not here to talk about that. Not about us, but about this is the reason we are here.
“Chelsea is the past”
Even when Mourinho was appointed as Pochettino’s replacement at Tottenham, there was conjecture that his loyalty remained with the Blues. “That was before I was dismissed!” Mourinho said, alluding to his previous departure from Chelsea. That is football in the contemporary day.
The two-time European champion said, “I can be extremely happy here [with Tottenham], make people happy, and there’s not a greater, let’s say fan in the world that wants Spurs to win and be successful than me.” Possibly not more than me, but maybe the same. Chelsea is therefore the past, a wonderful past divided between two eras, both of which had championships. That was then, though.
He said, “If you ask me, do I have anyone who I would want to take over from “my Chelsea,” let’s assume that, yes, I have but I seal my lips, even if he left Tottenham after just 18 months.
The team attained such a level that Chelsea will always remain Chelsea, regardless of who is playing with them. Since Chelsea will always be huge and my house will always be 200 metres from the stadium, I want to continue hearing the sound of success and pleasure. I’m very certain that’s how things will turn out.
The 61-year-old backed up his assertion soon after by saying he will always be drawn to the Blues. Naturally, my English link is Chelsea, he said. That is my perspective as a Chelsea guy following two Chelsea eras and six years.
This Chelsea is not the Chelsea we know.
Even though Jose Mourinho loves Chelsea, he has intimated that a return to Stamford Bridge is unlikely following an open conversation with a supporter. “Thank you my friend, but Chelsea is not the Chelsea we know,” Mourinho told a fan when asked whether he would return to the team.
‘All I desire’
Amidst rumours tying him to Newcastle United and a high-profile transfer to Saudi Arabia, the Special One has listed his requirements for future positions. “It is not like I am terrified of employment [with teams] not “built to win it,” he said, elucidating his position on taking on new tasks.
Mourinho remarked, “When certain [managers] have achieved a certain level maybe they say, ‘I will only have tasks created to win it.'” Making clubs into those “made to win it” or accomplishing certain goals is my responsibility.
My only request is that everyone determine the goals and milestones fairly. I am not allowed to join a club where winning the title is the goal because of my past. Oh no. All I ask is that it be equitable.
If I worked for a major Premier League team and we finished sixth, seventh, or eighth in the standings, would I still be employed? In other words, people need to view me the same way they view other individuals. For myself, it matters whether the club has goals and if I can declare that I am prepared to fight for them.
Though not quite realistic, [at least] somewhat realistic. Because we achieved it and nobody was dreaming of European Cup finals when I arrived in Roma. I cannot go to a team that is nearly relegated and whose goal is to win the Champions League. Though unfair, it is excellent.
