Third Premier League Club handed points deduction after defaulting On transfer Payments
Sheffield United have become the third Premier League team to receive a points penalty in recent weeks.
The Yorkshire club has been punished two points, with the penalty taking effect the following season when they compete in the EFL.
United are now at the bottom of the Premier League, nine points from safety, and seem unlikely to escape relegation this season.
If they tumble into the Championship, they will begin the following season with a two-point deficit.
Another two-point punishment will be delayed until the completion of United’s next EFL season.
An impartial disciplinary panel imposed the penalty for the 2022/23 season, after the team failed to make a series of payments to other clubs.
In a statement, the EFL said that “these defaults collectively exceeded 550 days.”
Sheffield United has agreed to pay the EFL’s £310,455 fee, and the suspended points will be triggered “if the club fails on any payment owing to another club under a transfer or compensation agreement for more than five business days from the due date for payment.”
